Kant’s Critique of Common Sense (1781) is a central text in modern philosophy. It introduces a thorough and challenging study of the human mind, knowledge and illusions. Kant argues that this is the location of certain concepts that precede and make experience possible, but we do not have the opportunity to draw conclusions from these concepts about the natural world. Criticism unites two opposing schools of philosophy: rationalism, which is based on an understanding of all our knowledge, and empiricism, which leaves all our knowledge to experience. Kant’s transcendental idealism points to a third path that goes beyond these alternatives.
